Owner type description	The Polytechnic University of Tirana is a public institution. The Higher Polytechnic Institute (HPI) was established in 1951, and this date marks the beginning of higher education in Albania. At that time, three disciplines were involved, including: Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. Later, other faculties were set up in Albania, and in 1957 they all founded the State University of Tirana. In 1991, all the engineering faculties were re-grouped and the Polytechnic University of Tirana (PUT) was founded. In 2007, as a result of the reforms initiated by the Albanian government for the reformation of the scientific research in Albania, the structure of the Polytechnic University of Tirana changed and currently it consists of six faculties and one Institution of Research and Development, including the: 1. Faculty of Geology and Mining 2. Faculty of Electrical Engineering 3. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 4. Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physics Engineering 5. Faculty of Construction Engineering 6. Faculty of Information Technology 7. Institute of Geo-sciences, Energy, Water and Environment. The university has managed 30 projects (TEMPUS and CEPUS) in the areas of curriculum development and reform programmes, as well as supported studies and teaching in the area of process engineering. In addition, 46 projects have been supported by the World Bank and the Albanian Government, which are mainly used for infrastructure improvement and scientific development. The university has also been involved in 30 projects on research and development, 49 projects from the Excellence Fund, and 16 other projects supported by FP6, FP7, IPA, and ECOPORT. There have been 80 references to scientific activities abroad and 140 references to scientific activities within the country. The number of congress / scientific conferences, national and international, organised by the Polytechnic University since its creation is over 200; as well hosting seven doctorate Schools (with approximately 200 PhD students). During the period from 2006-2011, over 100 books and textbooks and over 250 scientific articles from the university, were published in Albania and abroad. Since 1970, the university has published its scientific edition called "Bulletin of Technical Sciences", with includes over 1600 scientific articles.
Brief description	The Center for Research and Development performs independent research and development in the service of the learning process and postgraduate studies of the Faculty of Information Technology. Its mission is the preparation of high quality researchers in ICT and increasing the participation in national and international research activities in ICT. The Centre was founded in 2007, but its work is the continuation of the Institute for Informatics and Applied Mathematics (INIMA, a former Institute of Academy of Science). The main expertise of the center is focused on: - Operative systems; - Networking systems; - Parallel programming and distributed system; - Applied mathematics in earth sciences; - Internet technologies; - Programming languages.
